Over the last two days, many offered reflections on the unparalleled legacy of Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh, C.S.C. Wednesday evening’s (March 4, 2015) memorial service provided a stirring summation of the breadth and depth of Fr. Ted’s work, by featuring a veritable who’s-who of Church leaders, statesmen, Notre Dame leadership, and leaders in the world of higher education.
Indeed, he represented all that is well and good about being a priest. He was generous, kind, thoughtful, prayerful, strategic in his international dealings to broker peace around the world. He was a mentor to many, including me- Catherine. He was a role model, like my father, of a person who lives a life of integrity.
And he leaves us this Irish blessing,” began the message. “May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warmly on your face. And may the rain fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the very palm of his hand. Amen.”
