Disneyland, Anaheim, CA May 2011
Disney’s Planet Challenge (DPC) is a project-based learning environmental competition for classrooms across the United States. DPC teaches kids about science and conservation while empowering them to make a positive impact on their communities and planet. The Zachary Elementary School Wetland Warriors were the grand prize winners of the 2011 DPC. Working to save the Louisiana Wetlands; these children created a school nursery, raised and then planted 700 bitter panicum grass plugs on the beaches to prevent coastal erosion, created and sold books on the Wetlands to educate the community on wetlands preservation, raised over $1000 to buy soap to help the animal clean-up after the Gulf Oil spill, and are now beginning a school run AM station where students will be broadcasting Wetlands news to the community. Catherine was honored to be a guest of Disney for the program and awards ceremony, celebrating the work of Zachary Elementary and the DPC program as it continues to grow and evolve.
